About MELIOS

Who we are:

The MELIOS animal shelter in Gythio, Peloponnese, Greece, currently takes care of about 210 dogs. About 30 of them live outside as neutered street dogs at different places, where we supply them with food and water during our daily tour. We also take care of about 30 cats.

The animal shelter, founded in 2010, is run purely on an honorary basis, and all volunteers help without being paid. There have been times when the people in charge had to pay for the food out of their own pocket to ensure the animals’ survival. Therefore, MELIOS is grateful for any help and support.

What we do:

We take care of neglected, underfeeded, wounded and homeless animals. Wounded and sick dogs get the required medical treatment as far as we have money for it. We also try to find good homes for them by hanging up posters and ads in the area. Our friends in the Netherlands, in Belgium and Germany give us a great deal of support and help us find new homes for our wonderful and very social dogs.

Andreas was tied up without water and food in an abandoned house. If we had not found him, he would have died in agony!Finding dogs on the street in such conditions breaks our hearts.

What we need:

Unfortunately, we do not have enough money to go with every dog to the vet (the nearest vet is 45 km away), to buy all the required medicines, to rescue more animals, make more room for sick, weak or pregnant dogs and young puppies. The medications against Leishmania, a very common disease on the Peloponnesus, are particularly expensive: A single treatment costs more than € 200.

How you can help us:

You can support the animal shelter in several ways:

1: You may make a donation.

You can find the bank account information on this page.

2: You may sponsor a dog.

As little as €10 (or more) is enough to sponsor the dog of your choice. We will then send you information about your dog and a picture periodically.

3: Are you looking for a friend for life?

Greek dogs are very social dogs, and once you have seen our dogs here at MELIOS, you will lose your heart. Would you like a friend who will be there for you through thick and thin? There are so many furry noses that are waiting just for YOU!

4: Come and visit MELIOS to help us do the work.

You may combine it with a nice vacation in Gythio, a very charming town in Greece.

5: You can find more information here: “Support MELIOS”

MELIOS also takes care of necessary amputations in case of serious accidents!
